I had the idea about two days before I decided to go ahead with it - do a song parody of "Because I Got High". So, I went to work the next day and the lyrics came to me quite easily. Later on, towards the beginning of recording it, Matt and I worked through a few problematic lyrics and came to a final draft. By this time I had already taken the song and broken it down into its individual parts and recreated the music by itself with the help of the program ACID. I then bumped that onto my analog 4-track. We now had three tracks for vocals. Just three? This song required many more...
I did the backing vocals first, doubled them (sang the same thing twice), then bumped the music and vocals over to the only empty track left. We then recorded all of the vocals on three tracks - recording over the original three that now lay mixed already on the bumped track. Confused? I was when I mixed it. We had to juxtapose so many lyrics, etc. on different tracks that mixing it was quite tedious. Only one bit of vocals was mixed in the computer to fix a lull in the song. And then the video...
Writing and breaking down the song took a day. Recording took a day. Shooting the video took up a whole weekend nonstop. We are still recouping. We thought we were done, but while editing saw some room for more footage and jumped on it for a few more hours one evening. Editing the project took about three days. It was different than the trailers and shorts I have edited in the past. I enjoyed the freedom. I matched up the literal shots with their lyrical counterparts and that pretty much dictated the rest of the sequences. As always, I learned a good deal and we laughed the entire time. I'm sore. We hope you are as well after you watch it. Thanks for the read.
